Probably because english is silly.Sherbshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00803254488713719738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049922019121275672.post-75994717206721042912007-11-01T13:17:00.000-07:002007-11-01T13:17:00.000-07:00Sherbs, You're adorable! I had the perfect combination yesterday -- cake batter and peanut butter Tasti-D (yes.. I know.. it's not *actually* ice cream..) swirled with Butterfinger on top. Let me tell you, I was in heaven for the 3 minutes that it took me to devour it.

"I picked these candies on the basis that the only one I really love is (are? since the candy is plural in name?) Kit Kats."

Even though "candies" is plural, it would be "is." "Candies" is the object of "picked" from the independent clause of that sentence, and "one" is the subject of a completely different clause. Therefore, your verb should be singular. If you had said, "the only ONES that I really love," then it would be "are." A verb must agree with its subject in number. Thank you, Latin, for turning me into the nerd that I am. :)

Hope you and TP enjoyed your Halloween!

-StonerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
